International adoption/readoption

Readoption (International Children)

When you adopted your child from another country, you might have been issued an adoption decree or a certificate of guardianship and adoption. Imagine taking this document to the DMV or your child’s school as proof of your legal status. You’re probably thinking they will have no idea what to do with this document or they may refuse to recognize it as valid, and you’re right. This is why readoption in your home state is such a good idea.

Once the adoption is granted, you will receive both an adoption decree and a birth certificate from your state, documents that government agencies are familiar with. Readoption is also important because of the tentative nature of our country’s relationships with the rest of the world. Your child’s adoption many be challenged if diplomatic relations deteriorate. By solidifying your adoption in this country, you also ensure that your child’s right to inherit from you should you die without a will.

Finally, depending on which country you adopted from, a readoption may be absolutely required in order for your child to be granted citizenship. Please contact our office for a complimentary 15 minute consultation.
